Columbus Technologies and Services, Inc. was featured in the SBA 100. SBA 100 features one hundred businesses that have created at least 100 jobs since receiving SBA assistance.

In January 2009, Columbus Technologies and Services, Inc. was an up-and-coming small business specializing in NASA spacecraft initiatives for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. When NASA was forced to downsize the Laboratory’s budget, Columbus suffered a loss of more than 60 percent of its revenue in 2 weeks.

During this time, SBA was able to help Columbus obtain 2 new contracts with the Air Force, allowing the company to diversify. These contracts enabled Columbus hire over 20 new employees while retaining over 95 percent of incumbent personnel. These 2 contracts were key factors in propelling Columbus forward on a path of sustained growth and success.

In the early part of 2010, the SBA was successful in once again assisting Columbus in securing a contract with the Bureau of Land Management that enabled Columbus to hire 12 new employees.

As a by-product of the revenues generated from the three contracts the SBA was able to help Columbus gain, the company was able to bid on a large NASA procurement at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. This effort resulted in a 5-year contract valued at approximately $250 million for software engineering and support services, including 100 new employee positions for Columbus.

Columbus’ reputation continued to spread within the small business community, leading them to the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta and Denver, whereby Columbus was successful in winning two contract awards in the administrative and scientific sectors that brought on twenty new hires. These contracts gave Columbus the opportunity to recruit high-quality candidates who were unemployed for an extended period of time, but clearly capable of performing the tasks at hand.

Since 2009, Columbus has hired 184 employees.
