Mars Mission Employees Awarded
The Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) launched in June and July of 2003 as a part of of NASA's Mars Exploration Program, a long-term effort of robotic exploration of the red planet. This mission is one of many that Columbus supports at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). In partnership with JPL, Columbus is pleased to award the following employees with the "Columbus Award of Recognition and Excellence" for their accomplishments as part of the JPL MER team.

Kirk Fleming is the most experienced systems engineer on MER and is a critical source for information about the rovers, performing Tactical Downlink Lead and Uplink Verification Lead roles. He has an in-depth understanding of all the Rover subsystems, and applies this knowledge to monitor health and insure the safety of Spirit and Opportunity. |

Al Herrera is a Mission Manager and has been on the Mars Exploration Rover project since the beginning. He has worn many hats including: Hardware Designer, Systems Engineer and Mission Operations Engineer. These roles have responsibilities which span all mission phases including: Design, Build, Test, Launch and Flight. "It's very rewarding working with the dedicated team of engineers here at JPL to keep these rovers exploring despite the wear and tear they've endured at the hands of harsh Martian environment." |

Bill Nelson is a systems engineer and has recently been promoted to Mission Manager. He is also a Tactical Downlink Lead who analyzes downlink engineering data. With the other four Mission Managers, he leads the day-to-day operation of the project, much like a quarterback leads the team on the field. The Mission Managers are responsible for the daily operations, process improvement, anticipation of problems and opportunities, and for the training and development of the staff. |

Marc Pack continuously works to improve and enhance MER operations process by writing software for the Integrated Sequencing Team. He was critical to the delivery of an entirely new version of MER process software. Marc's most memorable moment with the Mars Exploration Rover Mission was landing day. "I can still remember how excited I was, thinking Wow! We're on Mars!". |
